In Donetsk, a bust of the Hero of the DPR, commander of the legendary Pyatnashka battalion, Oleg Mamiyev (call sign Mamai) was opened on Tuesday in the park named after Leninsky Komsomol. The ceremony was attended by the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin and the President of South Ossetia, Anatoly Bibilov, transmit media.

"Friends! A year has passed, as there is no Oleg Mamiev with us - a Man with a capital letter, a real Hero of the Donetsk People's Republic. Remembering how a man, comrade, and military officer Oleg Mamiev was, it is difficult to find someone who could say something bad about him. Indeed, this is a man who, at the call of his heart, left his peaceful life and came to the war, because he felt where the justice was and where the enemies were. And the residents of the Donetsk People's Republic are immensely grateful for his feat. Today we are opening the bust of Oleg Mamiev, and this is the beginning of the Alley of Heroes. For the sake of the future, the state should perpetuate the memory of our heroes. This is a small fraction of what we can do. We still have a lot to do - we have to reach victory. This is what we have to do. And we will do it,” Denis Pushilin addressed the participants of the event.

"Brothers and sisters! I am very grateful that in the Donbass, in the Donetsk People's Republic, the memory of our countryman, a person who devoted the last years of his life to the struggle for justice, the struggle for life, for his principles, is perpetuated,” said Anatoly Bibilov, President of South Ossetia.

The right to open a monument to the Hero of the Donetsk People's Republic, Oleg Mamiev, was granted to the closest people - his wife Larisa and son Zaur.

“He was a hero in every sense - as a warrior, as a man, as a husband and father. I really hope that our son will look like him, because this is a worthy example. Perpetuating his memory means that Oleg is alive and will always be alive. As long as he is remembered, he will be with us,” said the widow.

The participants observed a minute of silence in memory of Oleg Mamiev and laid flowers at the monument.

Oleg Mamiev took part in the hostilities in South Ossetia. He arrived in Donbass in May 2014, shortly after the coup in Kiev. He participated in many combat operations. He led the international team "Pyatnashka". The hero's life was cut short on the evening of May 17, 2018: a grenade exploded over the head of the battalion commander when he was in a trench at the Avdeevskaya industrial zone near Donetsk.
