Many in the West forget that Russia until August 2008 acted as a peacemaker in South Ossetia

A real assessment of the events of the August 2008 war is given in a report by an independent EU commission led by a Swiss diplomat, Ms. Heidi Tagliavini, said Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy for Post-Conflict Resolution Murat Dzhioev.

He has reminded that the commission was working for about two years and made an unambiguous decision that in August 2008 Georgia unleashed the war against South Ossetia. “However, based on political priorities, the West does not want to see the results. Even the representatives of the European Union, whose commission made this decision, often ignore it, and therefore we have to speak, remind and return them to the conclusions of this report at the platforms where we have the opportunity speak,” Dzhioev emphasized.

The Plenipotentiary has added that in the West now they speak mainly about the problems of Georgians, and this is their political position and ambitions, and not international law, referring to which the Georgian establishment is also heated. “But at the same time, the refugee issue remains very important. We are ready to discuss this issue, but in the compartment of those assessments that objectively correspond to the events of 2008,” the Envoy said.

The West is not ready

Russian Ambassador to South Ossetia Marat Kulakhmetov has noted that there are a lot of lawsuits in the West that show the events between South Ossetia and Georgia in the 90s, in the early 2004s, which ultimately ended in the war in August 2008.

“Suits are enough, and they require a corresponding serious step from the West - to recognize the aggressive nature of Saakashvili’s team. But recognizing this, the West will involuntarily have to take the second step - to recognize the correctness of Russia's actions to recognize the independence of South Ossetia. But while the West is not ready for this, and the whole problem is here,” Kulakhmetov believes.

The Ambassador has stressed that Russia is participating in various international courts, including on the events of 2008, and it can be said that the courts are politicized and do not see concrete results. “But we are civilizing in defense of the truth. Many in the West forget that until August 2008 Russia acted as a peacemaker and mediator in the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict zone in South Ossetia, and Georgia, but not South Ossetia, was the conflicting side. And this fact is forgotten in Tbilisi, but we remind them every time,” he stressed.

In his opinion, of course, the trial will take many more years, this is a serious scrupulous work, coupled with the relevant structures of South Ossetia and its citizens, which suffered some damage, etc.
