Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Alan Pliev stated that the president of Georgia rendered honors to people, who was burning down Ossetian villages in 20s of the 20th century and was killing civilians in 2008. To remind, on Georgia's Independence Day, a memorial devoted to those perished for independence of Georgia was opened in Tbilisi.
"The most shocking is the fact that he left spare space for future victims to be included into the memorial, inciting his people for new bloodshed", stated Pliev. President Saakashvili did not learn any lesson from the horrible results of the war in August 2008, and his pathological will for destruction became a banner for his compatriots".
Pliev believes that the people of Georgia should have asked their president what all these victims were meant for and why it was needed to create Georgia's image of an aggressor. In his turn, the Plenipotentiary for Human Rights David Sanakoev expressed his viewpoint that Georgian authorities' actions were irresponsible.
"It happened in all times that memorials were built up to commemorate heroes, so that the future generations would remember their deeds and their heroism, but in this case, I think that the actions of the Georgian authorities are irresponsible and immoral. They destroy the memorials of heroes to defeated fascism during the Great Patriotic War and build up memorials to those who are responsible for cruel killings of many innocent unarmed civilians in South Ossetia", stated the Ombudsman. He also noted that "with this kind of approach, after some time, the newly built memorial will be destroyed by successor leaderships with different understanding and viewpoints".
"By saying that Georgia's independence is worth living and dieing for, Saakashvili forgot about the same right of other people to strive for independence of their state. The citizens of South Ossetia enjoy the same right and it was rude and cynical of him to make such statements", said Sanakoev.
