The Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights of South Ossetia, Aelita Dzhioeva, took part online in the first International Theoretical and Practical Conference “The Origin and Development of Ideas on Human Rights and Freedoms”, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly, the official website of the Presidential Executive Office of the Republic of South Ossetia reports.
In her welcoming speech, she noted the importance of holding international conferences.
“International conferences are the platforms where we can discuss and share our work experience. I believe that such conferences are necessary,” the Children’s Ombudsman said.
Aelita Dzhioeva told the conference participants about South Ossetia’s commitment to the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“South Ossetia is a full-fledged subject of International law and positions itself as a political state.
In 2007, at the meeting of the Parliament, the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” was ratified, and the institution of the Commissioner for Human Rights in South Ossetia was established in 2004 in order to ensure state protection of the rights and freedoms of citizens of the Republic of South Ossetia,” she has emphasized.
The Children's Ombudsman has also noted that South Ossetia has passed a difficult path to its independence and international recognition.
“The rights of citizens of South Ossetia were constantly infringed upon during many years of large-scale military operations by Georgia. But we know that in 2008 Republic of South Ossetia was recognized by the Russian Federation, by Republic of Venezuela and Nicaragua. Since then, there has been a new countdown in time, when South Ossetia is a free and independent state.
The institution of the Commissioner protects the rights of South Ossetian citizens, despite the fact that it was created not so long ago,” Aelita Dzhioeva has noted.
It should be noted that the organizer of the conference was the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Abkhazia, Anas Kishmaria. The event was also attended by the ombudsmen of the Donetsk People's Republic, the Moscow and Yaroslavl regions of the Russian Federation and the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.
