Konstantin Kosachev: “Centuries-old ties of friendship are the foundation on which relations between Russia and South Ossetia are built”

Russia will continue to provide assistance to South Ossetia in building a modern and economically self-sufficient state, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev said during the meeting with a delegation of South Ossetian observers led by Chairman of the Republic Parliament Alan Alborov.

The Russian side was represented at the meeting by Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Grigory Karasin and members of the Cooperation Commission of the Federation Council and Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia, Russian Senators Crym Kazanokov and Vitaly Nazarenko. For the South Ossetian part, the meeting was attended by Vice-Speakers of Parliament Alexander Pliev and Vladimir Kelekhsaev, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-parliamentary Relations Zaza Driaev.

The Vice-Speaker of the Federation Council proposed focusing on the implementation of the current legal framework, which provides for the harmonization of the South Ossetian legislation with Russian legislation, as well as on the modernization of the social sphere.

Kosachev also expressed gratitude to the South Ossetian side for supporting Russia in the international arena, noting that centuries-old ties of friendship are the foundation on which relations between the two countries are built.

In his opinion, inter-parliamentary interaction is intense. In particular, the Vice-Speaker of the Federation Council noted the activities of the Inter-parliamentary Cooperation Commission, as well as the participation of the South Ossetian delegations in the work of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia.

During the conversation, issues related to the Agreement on the settlement of issues of dual citizenship were discussed, in particular, in order to update the set of by-laws in this area.

The parties also touched upon the topic of assistance from Russian parliamentarians to colleagues from South Ossetia in the field of establishing and developing international contacts.

Members of the South Ossetian parliamentary delegation shared their impressions of the organization of the election process in Russia and invited senators to take part in observing the elections to the Parliament of South Ossetia this summer.
