The results of the work of the international commission headed by Heidi Tagliavini, which determined that Georgia was the aggressor, are obvious, the South Ossetian Foreign Ministry said, commenting on the work of the Interim Parliamentary Commission in the neighboring state.
"In Georgia, under the chairmanship of the member of the political council of the Georgian Dream party Tea Tsulukiani, Interim Parliamentary Commission for the investigation of crimes committed by the former ruling party United National Movement, formed on February 5, 2025, began its work.
As noted, the Commission will investigate the crimes committed not only from 2003 to 2012, but will also touch upon the period after 2012, and will also touch upon the presidency of M. Saakashvili and, in particular, the events of August 2008, in connection with which a number of former Georgian military officials and political figures have already been questioned,” the official commentary of the Ministry states.
The Foreign Ministry has noted that for South Ossetia, the tragedy of August 2008, which resulted in the death of hundreds of civilians, Russian and Ossetian peacekeepers, and brought suffering to thousands of its citizens, was and remains the unhealed wound.
“Undoubtedly, the criminals guilty of unleashing military aggression, giving orders to invade South Ossetia, attack peacekeepers, and commit acts of genocide against the Ossetian people, must be punished.
Time will tell how accurately and transparently the current commission will approach the assessment of the events of August 2008, but the results of the work of the international commission headed by H. Tagliavini, which determined that Georgia is the aggressor, are obvious,” the Foreign Ministry has noted.
The Foreign Ministry has added that it also obvious the choice of the people of South Ossetia: building the independent state, striving for a comprehensive strengthening of relations with Russia, which is the guarantor of its security, and other friendly countries.
August 2008 clearly demonstrated who was a friend of the Ossetian people and who was the enemy, the Ministry has concluded.
