The Republic of South Ossetia and the Syrian Arab Republic announced mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This is stated in the communique of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the RSO on mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Syrian Arab Republic.
Mutual recognition of independence and establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of South Ossetia and the Syrian Arab Republic is an important and significant historical event, said South Ossetian President Anatoly Bibilov.
"New friends are needed for everyone, let alone countries that found themselves in difficult conditions, faced with military aggression and terrorism," the head of state said. "I believe the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries will be beneficial to the peoples of Syria and South Ossetia."
Institutional cooperation between Georgia and NATO began in 1994, when Georgia became a member of the Partnership for Peace program. After the "Rose Revolution", since 2004 the cooperation between Georgia and NATO has become more intensive. In 2011, Georgia received the status of a "post-graduate student of NATO". In 2014, at a summit in Wales, a package of measures was approved that would assist Georgia in its striving for membership in the alliance.
