President of South Ossetia has set the date for elections to the new Parliament

The parliamentary elections in South Ossetia will be held on June 9. The corresponding decree was signed on Monday by President Alan Gagloev, the press service of the head of state reports.

“Schedule the elections of deputies of Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia of a new convocation for June 9, 2024. This decree comes into force from the date of its official publication,” the document says.

Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia, according to the Constitution of the Republic, is characterized as a permanent body.

The first composition of legislators (62 deputies) - at that time the Supreme Council of the Republic of South Ossetia - was formed after a popular vote on December 9, 1990. Its core consisted of activists from “Adaemon Nykhas” - the organization that took the path to self-determination, national viability, and opposition to the Georgian nationalism.

Over three decades, more than 220 people have been deputies of Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia. The eighth convocation of the Parliament will be elected in 2024.

Since 2019, the elections have been holding using a proportional-majority electoral system. The term of office is 5 years.
