Deputy Head of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev has admitted that the idea of joining Abkhazia and South Ossetia to Russia can be implemented if the West continues to aggravate the situation in Georgia. He has written about this in his article published on the website aif.ru.

"We don't need a repeat of history in 2008. We remain ready to solve problems at the negotiating table in the spirit of the UN Charter. But if our concerns become real, we will not hesitate. In Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the idea of joining Russia is still popular and it may well be implemented if there are good reasons for this," the politician said.

The Deputy Head of the Security Council of the Russian Federation is confident that "for the West, this turn of events will be another shameful fiasco and yet another symbol of a catastrophic loss of influence." He has added that history severely punishes all those who neglect its lessons.

According to Medvedev, the West should learn that in 2008 Russia stopped the attack on Tbilisi, when it managed to eliminate the threats and guarantees of security. "But now the situation is being actively aggravated again - apparently in order to create another hotbed of tension near our borders in addition to the Ukrainian flank. Again there is talk about the possible admission of Georgia to NATO. As ordered, bursts of Russophobia have begun in this country," he has reminded.
