On the Day of Memory and Sorrow - June 22, the action "Let the Candles of Memory burn ..." was held on the Alley of Glory in Tskhinval, the participants of which laid flowers at the Eternal Flame.
Dozens of people gathered at the memorial, despite the cloudy day, to lay flowers and light candles to pay tribute to the memory of those perished in the Great Patriotic War.
The flower-laying ceremony was attended by the leadership of the Republic headed by President Alan Gagloev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to South Ossetia Marat Kulakhmetov, representatives of ministries and departments, and the public.
Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Medoev, in a comment to journalists, noted that "we can talk about the significance of today for a long time."
“I remembered that I was present at the opening of this monument in 1975, when I was 15 years old. Veterans gathered here, there were many of them. The whole city came to the opening of the memorial. The beginning of the war is a very significant day - the beginning of a huge tragedy for a huge country. 27 million people died during the years of battle - this should never be forgotten. We need to remember these events so that they do not happen again in the future,” Medoev said.
On June 22, 1941, at 12:15 pm, the Soviet government spoke on the radio announcing the attack on the USSR. On the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, a Minute of Silence action was held throughout Russia at 12:15. As noted during the event, a moment of silence was announced in Stalinir (now Tskhinval), as well as in Abkhazia and Transnistria.
