In the capital of South Ossetia, wreaths and flowers were laid at the Eternal Flame on the Alley of Glory on the occasion of the celebration of Defender of the Fatherland Day - February 23.

The event was attended by the leadership of South Ossetia, headed by President of the Republic Anatoly Bibilov, Russian Ambassador to the Republic Marat Kulakhmetov, deputies of the Parliament of South Ossetia, military personnel of the Defense Ministry and the 4th Russian military base, representatives of the public of the Republic.

South Ossetia received the news of the recognition of the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk by Russia with particular joy, and is fully supporting the correct decision of the Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Madina Plieva, the head of the Fund for the wounded who became disabled during the hostilities in South Ossetia from 1989 to 2008.

Plieva has reminded that it was the Republic of South Ossetia that was the first state to recognize the independence of the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic.

A Chairman of the Parliament of South Ossetia Alan Tadtaev called similar fates of South Ossetia, the Donetsk and the Luhansk people's republics, commenting on the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to recognize the state sovereignty and independence of the Donbass republics.

"Probably, this event is perceived most strongly in South Ossetia, because the Republic has passed the same path of statehood formation that our fraternal peoples have passed.

President of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov congratulated the heads of the DPR and the LPR Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik on the recognition of the independence of the Republics by the Russian Federation.

“On behalf of the people, the leadership of the Republic of South Ossetia and on my own behalf, I congratulate you on the recognition of the independence of the Donetsk People's Republic by the Russian Federation!

The State Security Committee of South Ossetia has noted the extremely negative reaction of the Georgian side, as well as pro-American public and political organizations operating on its territory, to the fact that Russia has recognizes the sovereignty and independence of the Donetsk and the Luhansk People's Republics, the agency said in the statement released on Tuesday.

“In particular, official Tbilisi, drawing parallels between 2022 and 2008, gas declared that the decisions taken by the Russian side are allegedly unpromising and ineffective.

South Ossetia has welcomed expressing full solidarity with the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to recognize the state sovereignty and independence of the DPR and the LPR, the South Ossetian Foreign Ministry said in the statement in connection with the recognition by the Russian Federation of the independence of the Donetsk and the Luhansk People's Republics.

South Ossetia has welcomed the recognition of the sovereignty of the fraternal republics of Donbass, this is an important and responsible decision of the Russian leadership, said Foreign Minister Dmitry Medoev.

President of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov has written on his Telegram channel that he personally congratulated the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin on the long-awaited event.

"I personally congratulated Denis Pushilin on a long-awaited and such an important event for all of us! The people of South Ossetia remember well what war is and how important a helping hand is in difficult times. Russia does not abandon its own!", - has written the head of state, who is in Moscow.

Events dedicated to the Defender of the Fatherland Day will be held in Tskhinval on February 23, the press service of the Ministry of Culture of South Ossetia told the “Res” news agency.

“On Wednesday, at 11.00 am, will take place the ceremony of laying the Garland of Memory and Glory to the Monument to the Defenders of the Fatherland on Tuganov Street, in the capital of our Republic. On the same day, at 12.00, a grand meeting dedicated to the Defender of the Fatherland Day will be held,” the press service said.

On Sunday, Foreign Minister of South Ossetia Dmitry Medoev sent a congratulatory message to Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Artsakh David Babayan on the occasion of the Artsakh Revival Day.
