The Central Election Commission of South Ossetia has registered the action group, which has included 26 public and political figures, to hold a referendum on the Republic's entry into Russia, the CEC representative Igor Chochiev told the “Res” news agency.
According to him, the CEC meeting was held on Wednesday evening, now as soon as the action group for holding a referendum on the unification of the Republic of South Ossetia with Russia receives a registration certificate, and this is already tomorrow, it can start collecting signatures, it is necessary to collect at least one thousand signatures.
The action group has included four presidents of the Republic: current president Anatoly Bibilov, ex-presidents Ludwig Chibirov, Eduard Kokoity, Leonid Tibilov, a total of 26 people - political and public figures," he said.
Earlier it was reported that the application was sent in accordance with paragraph 4 of Article 8 of the Constitutional Law "On the referendum of the Republic of South Ossetia." The question proposed for submission to the referendum: "Do you support the unification of the Republic of South Ossetia and Russia?".
From the moment of receiving the registration certificate, the action group has the right to voluntarily and independently begin collecting signatures in support of holding the referendum within three months.
After the collection of signatures is over, the CEC checks all documents within 15 days and sends its conclusion to the President.
The President, within 10 days from the date of receipt of the documents, sends them to the Supreme Court of the Republic with a corresponding request.
The Supreme Court reviews compliance with the requirements of the Constitution and sends a decision to the President within 14 days, which is subject to immediate publication.
In case of a positive decision of the Supreme Court, the President is obliged to set a date for the referendum within 10 days.
In case of a negative decision of the Supreme Court, all the procedures are terminated.
