A mourning meeting in memory of the victims of the Ered tragedy will be held in South Ossetia on March 18. Issues of preparation for the mourning event were discussed on Thursday at the meeting of the State Commission for the organization of holidays and memorable dates.

The commemorative event will be held at the city cemetery, where thirty-two years ago, 12 Ossetian men were buried alive in a mass grave after brutal beatings and torture.

Representatives of the leadership of South Ossetia, ministries and departments, relatives of the victims of the tragedy, and representatives of the public will take part in the mourning rally.

At the end of the rally, flowers will be laid at the monument to the victims of the Ered tragedy.

In addition, on the eve of the memorable date, the State Drama Theater will show the play “Fæstag ævdisæn” (The Last Witness), which is dedicated to the tragic pages of the history of South Ossetia.

On March 8, 1991, in the South Ossetian village of Ered, occupied by Georgian armed gangs, a Ural car with civilians was blocked, which was heading to Tskhinval. Women and children were released after being beaten and abused, but nothing was known about the fate of 12 men for more than two years. Only later it turned out that they were buried alive after torture and torment.

The Ered tragedy became one of the most terrible and inhumane events in the history of the country. Those responsible for the crime have not been punished yet.
