In 2024, the successful implementation of a timber processing project began in South Ossetia, which provides both jobs and income to the Republic's own budget, and does not threaten environmental problems, President Alan Gagloev said at the final press conference on Saturday, commenting on public concerns about possible harm to the ecology of the Republic.
According to him, the first batch of timber will be sent from South Ossetia to Syria and Iran.
"In Soviet times, the volumes of timber cut down in our country were 40 times higher than today's volumes," the President said. - Then up to 100 thousand cubic meters of over mature beech were cut down in our forests, and today it is up to 3.5 thousand cubic meters. The difference is significant, given that the annual beech growth in our country is 70 thousand cubic meters. And the total beech reserves in our forests are 18 million cubic meters, of which more than 4 million are over mature wood that should be cut down." According to the President, when implementing the timber processing project, both the local and the invited experts, when studying the timber processing project, were convinced that there were no danger of violating our ecology.
