Today South Ossetia is celebrating the fifth anniversary of Russia's recognition of the independence of the Republic.
On the night of August 8, 2008 the Georgian armed forces invaded South Ossetia, violating the signed agreements on the settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict. The fighting outbroke in the capital of the Republic Tskhinval and in the surrounding areas. The Georgian air force dropped bombs on Dzau district. Against the civilians were used multiple launch rocket system "Grad", armored vehicles and aircraft, as well as the artillery. Tskhinval and several Ossetian villages were severely damaged, were killed hundreds of civilians and defenders of the Republic, the Russian peacekeepers.
Under these circumstances, August 8, the Russian leadership decided to start a military operation to force the aggressor to peace. For two days the units of the Russian 58th Army ousted the Georgian forces from South Ossetian territory.
August 26, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev adopted a decision to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
The recognition of the statehood of South Ossetia has become one of the most important events in the current history of the Republic. August 26 has become a national holiday. The celebrations are taking place in the capital and in the districts of the Republic. Today will be laid flowers at the memorial sites, and in Tskhinval will be held a solemn meeting of the public. The events will be concluded with fireworks.
