The will for victory, dedication and belief in the rightness of their cause have allowed the Abkhaz people to protect their homeland, preserve the honor and dignity of the nation, said the President of South Ossetia Leonid Tibilov speaking at a ceremony in Sukhum on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the victory of Abkhazia in the Patriotic War 1992-1993.
" September 30, 1993 the Abkhaz people in the hardest conditions of the war reached a great and important goal - the liberation of the country from the Georgian military forces. The will for victory, dedication and belief in the rightness of their cause allowed the Abkhaz people to hold out against the enemy, to protect their homeland, to save their honor, their national dignity. The evil power of the aggressor was broken by courage and fortitude of the residents of the Republic,"- said Tibilov.
The tragedy of Abkhazia has not left indifferent honest people in the world – the just struggle of the heroic people of Abkhazia was supported by those following the ideals of good and justice, values of humanity and ethnic solidarity.
" Volunteers from South Ossetia have also taken an active part in repelling the Georgian aggression against Abkhazia. Realizing the need to oust the insolent aggressor, the unity of purpose and spiritual kinship with the fraternal Abkhazian people were the motivations for the formation of the Ossetian combat units. Despite the difficult socio-political situation in South Ossetia, it was a unanimous decision of the South Ossetian society," - the president said.
Along with the other defenders of Abkhazia, South Ossetian volunteers displayed courage and heroism on the battlefield.
"Many of them were given the highest state awards of the Republic of Abkhazia. Unfortunately, some of them - posthumously. Today, on this festive day, we pay tribute to the memory of those who fell on the field of battle for the freedom of Abkhazia. It will take decades, but the multinational people of the fraternal republic will honor the fallen heroes, all the victims of the aggression," - the president said.
Today's celebration , which has become a symbol of unparalleled courage and greatness of spirit of the fraternal people will bring together all those who appreciate the history, culture and spiritual values of Abkhazia , the achievements of the older generations and contemporaries , the traditions of the native land.
"The victory, won at the cost of heavy losses, inspired the Abkhaz people to new successes and achievements, the most striking of which in the modern history of Abkhazia, is to gain the international recognition. Recognition of the state independence of Abkhazia by the Russian Federation and by a number of other states has ensured safe and peaceful development of the country. Today the Republic is sure to follow the path of strengthening political, economic and social stability.
