For the first time after the 2008 war, Georgia organized direct provocations on the border of South Ossetia
The main threat to the national security of South Ossetia and the security of the region as a whole remains Georgia and its reluctance to recognize the fact of sovereignty and independence of South Ossetia, said Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia Dmitry Medoev at a press conference. According to him, the growing presence of NATO in Georgia and the intensification of steps to draw Georgia into the military bloc are of serious concern.
“For the first time after the 2008 war, Georgia organized direct provocations on the border of South Ossetia. On the border with Georgia in the immediate vicinity of the South Ossetian village of Tsnelis (Uista), Georgian security forces, having delved into the territory of South Ossetia, illegally erected a reinforced stationary police post on August 23, 2019,” the Minister emphasized.
The Foreign Minister has added that in order to ensure the safety of citizens of the Republic living in the area, South Ossetian border guards, as part of a special humanitarian operation approved by President of South Ossetia, restored part of the territory of South Ossetia, taking dominant positions.
“The South Ossetian side has a clear position on this score - the Georgian side should remove the illegal post, withdraw representatives of its security forces to Georgia and begin to consider the possibility of establishing a security zone in the border area from the village of Tsnelis (Uista) to the Georgian settlement of Chorchana,” - considers Medoev.
The Foreign Minister reminded that in connection with this the Ministry had repeatedly made relevant statements and comments. South Ossetia has repeatedly appealed to the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia, to the co-chairs of the Geneva discussions on security in Transcaucasia, as well as to all participants in the Georgian-Ossetian settlement with a request to exert appropriate pressure on the Georgian side in order to stop further provocation of tension.
