The victory and the role of the Ossetians participating in the Great Patriotic War were discussed at the round table at the South Ossetian State University. The event was dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Second World War.

The conference participants have become political scientists, philosophers, historians, representatives of the Russian Embassy in South Ossetia, representatives of Rossotrudnichestvo and students.

Robert Kulumbegov, head of the Department of History of Ossetia and Caucasian Studies, reminded that in Ossetia, almost every family had a participant in the Great War.

“Victory Day is a holiday that unites citizens of the post-Soviet space. Almost every family in Ossetia had a participant in this war who contributed to the Great Victory. Today we are all responsible for preserving this memory,” Kulumbegov said.

He noted with regret that the problem of fascism is also relevant today on the battlefields in the special military operation.

“Today, the army of Ukraine os openly demonstrating a sign of fascism, and I don’t see any logic in the actions of the army leadership - how is this possible. In any case, I am sure that victory will be ours in the special military operation,” said the Associate Professor.

Rector of the South Ossetian State University Vadim Tedeev has stressed that the memory of the great war is eternal.

“On May 9, we will host the event dedicated to the Victory. It is important for us that our employees and people see that the memory happening at the front during the Second World War is eternal and, most importantly, that the war ended in victory. I believe that the special military operation will also end in our victory. Many guys from South Ossetia are taking an active part in the fighting in the special military operation.” the rector said.

At the conference, historians and associate professors read out reports on the theme of the Great Patriotic War.

Associate Professor of the Faculty of History and Law, Professor Givi Gatikoev spoke in his report about the valor of the Ossetian participants in the Second World War.

“On the fronts of the Second World War, 112,000 Ossetians, along with everyone else, opposed the enemy, and almost half of them did not return from the battlefields. Over 50 Ossetian fighters were awarded the rank of general and admiral. Almost 60 natives of Ossetia received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. And 34 of them are Ossetians by nationality, and this is the highest percentage of all the peoples of the Soviet Union,” Gatikoev said.

During the round table, students of South Ossetia State University were awarded diplomas of various degrees for their active participation in the work of the section on the history of Ossetia and Caucasian studies in the 73rd scientific student conference of South Ossetia State University.
