The Treaty of Alliance and Integration between South Ossetia and Russia, signed on March 18, 2015, took bilateral relations to a new level, ensuring a coordinated foreign policy, a single defense space and close cooperation in the security sphere.

The document has both historical and strategic significance for both countries.

Presidents of Russia and South Ossetia, Vladimir Putin and Leonid Tibilov, signed the Treaty 10 years ago.

“The document not only specifies the provisions on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance between our countries from September 17, 2008, but also expands the framework contractual and legal structure, marking an exit to a new level of relations,” the then leader of South Ossetia emphasized at the press conference following the signing of the Treaty.

Vladimir Putin, in turn, noted that "the milestone document records the high level of interstate dialogue achieved by Russia and South Ossetia, and defines long-term guidelines for bilateral relations."

"A common defense and security space will be formed between our countries, the integration of customs authorities will be ensured, and free crossing of the interstate border by our citizens will be introduced," the Russian leader noted.

To date, more than 130 agreements have been concluded within the framework of the bilateral Treaty.

Russia has been providing significant assistance to South Ossetia by implementing investment programs, increasing pensions and salaries of civil servants.

Today, the participation of Ossetian volunteers in the special operation in Ukraine clearly demonstrates the close ties and unity of the two peoples united by the fight against fascism.

Centuries-old friendship and common historical destinies are the basis of special interstate relations between South Ossetia and Russia.
