September 20 is the 31st anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of South Ossetia. On this day in 1990, the Council of People's Deputies decided to raise the status of the autonomous region to the South Ossetian Soviet Democratic Republic within the Soviet Union. This decision was one of the first steps towards the independence and international recognition of the Republic.

This decision was made due to the socio-political situation in Georgia. The forces of aggressive nationalism relied on massive support.

The delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic, headed by Deputy Speaker of the People's Assembly and a member of the Parliamentary Friendship Commission of Syria and South Ossetia, Muhammad Akram Al-Ajlani, together with the Speaker of the Parliament of South Ossetia Alan Tadtaev and representatives of the deputy corps, laid wreaths and flowers at the memorial complex to the Defenders of the Fatherland in the center of Tskhinval.

The Syrian delegation has also included the Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Russian Federation Riyad Haddad and other officials.
