The representative office of the International Committee of the Red Cross will continue its activities in South Ossetia next year. By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic, the term of the organization’s stay in the country was extended from January 1 to December 31, 2020.
The report on the ICRC’s activities from December 2018 to November 2019 at a government meeting on Friday was presented by Dmitry Medoev, South Ossetian Foreign Minister.
“The main areas of activity of the representative office of the international organization in the Republic are: searching for missing persons, facilitating the restoration of family ties broken by the Georgian military aggression against South Ossetia in August 2008, implementing a social support program, providing assistance to the most vulnerable categories of the population, including disabled people, elderly and infirm citizens, monitoring the conditions of detention and treatment of persons in custody, assistance in emergency medical transportation as a neutral intermediary, etc., " Medoev said.
According to him, over the past year, as part of the social support program, the ICRC office provided humanitarian assistance to urgently needy citizens, provided them with hygiene kits on a quarterly basis, еру mission staff visited elderly people at home, and people with disabilities received orthopedic care.
Medoev has also added that the foreign Ministry of the Republic notes the positive orientation of the tripartite coordination mechanism on missing persons, acting on the platform of the ICRC.
