Foreign Minister of South Ossetia Dmitry Medoev commented on the statement of the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on the possibility of Minsk recognizing the independence of the republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the press service of the Foreign Ministry reported.
“The statement of the Belarusian president has good grounds, and this is not only the prevailing and obvious international legal situation related to the existence of the Union State Russia-Belarus, which implies political obligations, including the pursuit of a coordinated foreign policy,” Medoev said. - First of all, we are connected by a common history and many years of experience of living in a single state, including the memory of the joint struggle against fascism during the Great Patriotic War. In the light of recent changes in the international arena, the rapid growth of tension around our countries, which we are witnessing, the desire for unity and solidarity in the face of common threats is very understandable.”
According to Medoev, the current military-political crisis around Ukraine and the speeding up of Georgia's militarization process in the southern direction have actualized the search for collective security.
“But there is another important reason for such a decision - it is full-fledged interstate relations of the Republic of South Ossetia with the Russian Federation, with which more than 100 intergovernmental and interstate agreements signed at a high level have been signed to date, the most important of which are defense and security, customs affairs and border, interaction in the international arena. South Ossetia strictly follows the signed agreements and values the high level of bilateral relations,” the Minister emphasized.
He has noted that the Republic of South Ossetia, a sovereign state with all the attributes of statehood, including effectively operating systems of legislative, executive and judicial authorities, is always open for international relations with all states that share fundamental international legal principles.
