The coronavirus pandemic that has swept the whole world has caused a slowdown in the establishment of relations between Italy and South Ossetia, Mauro Murgia, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic in Italy, told reporters.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused some disruptions in our relationship. In addition, Russophobia, which is currently happening in the world, also leaves its mark on our activities, but we are fully confident that we will continue to work and cooperate together,” Murja said.

According to him, thanks to the productive work of their department, the awareness of the Italian population about South Ossetia has grown significantly.

“About 10 years ago, almost nothing was known about South Ossetia in Italy, simply because nothing was said about it. Now everything has changed. A lot of work has been done at the level of understanding of ordinary Italians. We have representative offices everywhere, from the north to the south of Italy, where people talk about Ossetia and the Ossetians, their culture and traditions. Considering the situation in the world and the negative manipulations against us, which, unfortunately, are acting, motivate us to take more active actions, and our work becomes even more effective,” Murgia has emphasized.

According to him, for a long time they have been positioning the South Ossetian people as a society that wants independence.

“Our representatives position the South Ossetians as a people who want to have their own statehood and independence. We understand that this feeling should be part of our common struggle for freedom, independence and spirituality, which should always accompany us,” the representative of the Foreign Ministry said.

It should be reminded that Mauro Murgia paid a working visit to the Republic as part of the Italian delegation to participate in the commemorative events dedicated to the 18th anniversary of the terrorist attack at school No. 1 in the city of Beslan. He was accompanied by the San Marino flutist Monica Moroni and a journalist Luca Pingitore.
