In many ways, the emergence and existence of such an international structure as the Organization of Unrepresented Peoples and Nations (UNN) is due to the policy of double standards pursued for decades by leading Western countries and organizations in recognizing the right of nations to self-determination, the head of the Information and Analytical Department of the Presidential of South Ossetia believes. According to him, "in fact, we are dealing with unfair ranking of countries and peoples, when some can count on access to international platforms and support from influential international structures such as the EU, OSCE, etc., while others are essentially put in the position of outcasts in respect of which the violation of the fundamental principles of international law and elementary human rights is allowed, if not completely sanctioned.
“The latest EU decision regarding the non-recognition of Russian passports issued to residents of South Ossetia, Abkhazia, the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions is a vivid example of such an approach,” he has stressed.
30 years ago, on January 24, 1993, the General Assembly of the Organization of Unrepresented Peoples (The Hague, the Netherlands) adopted a resolution on the situation in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, condemning the policy of the Georgian government aimed at suppressing the rights and freedoms of neighboring peoples and the use of military force by the government of Georgia .
According to the expert, the organization of unrepresented peoples and nations is a very heterogeneous association, which, according to various sources, includes representatives of 40-50 peoples and countries that have not received recognition from the international community.
“Some members of the UNN terminated their membership in this organization after they became the UN members.
Nevertheless, since its inception in 1991, the UN has been regularly holding conferences and other events, taking initiatives aimed at supporting the right of nations to self-determination. This structure, among other things, has repeatedly made statements in support of Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” said the representative of the Presidential Executive Office.
As noted by Yury Vazagov, given the situation of total information blockade, built around the Republic of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by Georgia and its Western partners, such appeals from the UN were positively perceived by the South Ossetian public.
According to him, at the same time, for various reasons, Abkhazia has been taking a more active part in the work of the UN than South Ossetia all these years.
As an example, he cited the fact that conferences of this organization were held more than once in Sukhum, and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia were members of the UN leadership with the rank of vice president.
