Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko discussed with representatives of the EU, UN and OSCE the situation on the border of South Ossetia and Georgia, the Russian Foreign Ministry reports.
The consultations in Moscow were attended by the co-chairs of the International Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia – the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar, the UN Representative Cihan Sultanoglu and Special Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office for the South Caucasus Annika Söder.
"In the context of preparations for the next round of Geneva discussions scheduled for the end of March this year, the Russian party emphasized, as a priority, the continuation of substantive work on an agreement on the non-use of force between Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia,, as well as the early start of the delimitation process and demarcation of the state border between the three indicated countries, "the message says.
It was also confirmed that the most optimal formats for solving problems remain Incident Prevention and Response Mechanisms (IPRM) on the Georgian border with South Ossetia and Abkhazia. "In this regard, a hope has been expressed for an early resumption of the meetings of the Georgian-Abkhaz IPRM in Gala," the Russian Foreign Ministry noted.
The Geneva discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia are held after the events of August 2008, when Georgia attacked South Ossetia. The negotiations are attended by representatives of Russia, Abkhazia, Georgia, the United States and South Ossetia, as well as observers from the UN, European Union and OSCE.
