In a situation of global world instability, South Ossetia is looking for reliable protection and hopes to find it as part of Russia, this confirms the status of the Russian Federation as a peacemaker, said Viktor Bondarev, the head of the defense committee of the Federation Council.
Earlier, President of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov stated that the Republic would soon take legal steps to become part of Russia. He has noted that the opportunity to realize this "strategic goal" was back in 2014, when Crimea was reunited with the Russian Federation following the referendum.
"The desire of South Ossetia to become part of Russia confirms the reputation of our country as a liberator, peacemaker and guarantor of the safety of civilians," the Russian senator wrote on his Telegram channel.
According to Bondarev, Russia is always ready to lend a helping hand to those who need it. "Our national history is a series of" collecting lands. "What is important, to a large extent, the growth of the territory of Russia was carried out peacefully. The peoples and ethnic groups themselves were striving for to be part of Russia, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union," the politician wrote.
" Transcaucasia is a very problematic macro-region. Unfriendly, expansive Georgia, which cannot even resolve its internal political problems, seeks to take South Ossetia under its control. Attempts by Georgians to subjugate the South Ossetian people through armed struggle against civilians in 2008 failed," - said the parliamentarian.
Then Russia sent its peacekeeping contingent and carried out a special operation to force Georgia to peace, as a result of the "five-day war" South Ossetia found peace, Bondarev emphasized.
"In a situation of global world instability, South Ossetia, of course, is looking for reliable protection and hopes to find it being g part of Russia, knowing that Russia is capable of providing security," he has written.
The senator has noted that Russia is a multinational and multi-confessional state, never infringes on the national identity of non-titular peoples and ethnic groups, does not prohibit their national culture and does not limit traditions. "Under the auspices of Moscow, life is comfortable, the nations and peoples feel safe," the head of the Federation Council Committee has concluded.
