The International Scientific and Practical Conference "Sociolinguistic Problems of the Modern Iranian Languages: Ossetian Language" opened at the South Ossetian State University.
The event is organized by the South Ossetian State University, the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the South Ossetian Research Institute.
First Deputy Prime Minister Alan Dzhioev noted the importance of the work carried out by linguists and wished the conference participants fruitful work.
Rector of the South Ossetian State University, Vadim Tedeev, has noted that in 2016 the University signed the agreement with the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"The day before, we held a meeting with our guests from the Institute of Linguistics and discussed the possibility of writing dissertations at the Russian Academy of Sciences. The South Ossetian State University pays special attention to scientific activities, and we will continue to hold various events, primarily of a scientific and practical nature," Tedeev said.
Andrey Kibrik, Director of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has noted that during the stay of the delegation members in South Ossetia, they had a number of meaningful meetings.
"We are very impressed by the Republic, by how much has been done. Many thanks to the South Ossetian State University and to the South Ossetian Research Institute for the initiative to hold the conference. I am sure that we will have a meaningful discussion today, interesting reports. I wish everyone success," he said.
Director of the Institute Robert Gagloyty called the conference a landmark event in the scientific world of South Ossetia.
"Preservation of the Ossetian language and its in-depth study is a priority task facing society. Our language is a national pride, a great national treasure that cannot be ignored. I think that the reports on the agenda will arouse great interest, demonstrating the importance and social significance of the work of linguists in the field of sociolinguistics of the Iranian languages,” Gagloity has noted.
The conference will include sectional and plenary sessions, where reports will be read out that touch upon sociolinguistic issues of the Iranian-speaking area. Particular attention will be paid to research on the Ossetian language.
The IV scientific school-seminar “Ontosociolinguistics: concepts, methods, tasks” will also begin its work later.
