The next meeting of the Mechanisms on Prevention and Reaction to Incidents (MPRI), which is operating within the framework of the Geneva discussions on security in the Caucasus, is being held on the border of South Ossetia and Georgia.
The meeting is attended by representatives of South Ossetia, Georgia, Russia, EU and OSCE. South Ossetian delegation is headed by Deputy Presidential Envoy to South Ossetia on post-conflict resolution Khokh Gagloyty.
As IA "Res" has been informed at the administration office of the authorized representative, the meeting participants will discuss the situation on the border, including the incidents that have occurred since the previous meeting held within the framework of MPRI.
In addition, the South Ossetian side will continue the discussion on the situation in the village of Zardiantkari, which is located near the border of South Ossetia, across the Ossetian village of Khelchua, where the Georgian police set up its post that has caused serious concern for their safety among the local population.
It should be noted that the situation in the village of Zardiantkari, which emerged on June 29 after the removal of the police post from the village of Mereti by the Georgian authorities a few hundred meters closer to the state border of South Ossetia, has previously been discussed at two extraordinary meetings, but the meeting ended without any result. This village is inhabited by the Ossetians, although the area of the village belongs to Georgia. Since June 29, residents whose homes appeared to be beyond the Georgian post, left their homes and have not yet returned home, fearing for their lives.
It should be noted that the population of the Georgian village receives electricity light from South Ossetia, in particular, from the village of Khelchua, which is bordering on Zardiantkari. Accordingly, the residents pay taxes for electricity to the state budget of South Ossetia. The agreement on the establishment of MPRI was achieved at the fourth round of the Geneva talks on Security in Transcaucasia in February 2009.
