On May 29 South Ossetia will be marking the 21th anniversary of the adoption of the Act of Independence. As noted by President Leonid Tibilov at the meeting with the heads of law enforcement agencies of the Republic, since 2010, this date is a public holiday in South Ossetia.
"This date is of particular importance for our Republic. At that time, South Ossetia was in a very difficult situation; the Republic was threatened with mortal danger from Georgia. In this regard, it was decided to declare independence"- reminded the president. He has said that a series of events will be held in the Republic to mark this important date.
The act of declaration of independence of South Ossetia was adopted by the Supreme Council of the Republic on May 29, 1992 at the height of the Georgian military aggression. In its decision, the first convocation deputies of the Parliament of South Ossetia proceeded from the impending mortal danger, in connection with the atrocities, the genocide of Ossetians, cruelty and perfidy of the Georgian authorities during the collapse of the Soviet Union. This document is based on the results of the election to the Supreme Council of the Republic in December 1990 and on the will of the people in a referendum January 19, 1992.
